AS & A Level Chemistry

Cambridge International AS and A Level Chemistry (9701) develops the subject into three clear strands, physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, and ties them together with strong practical work. You move from atomic structure, bonding, energetics and equilibria into the patterns of the Periodic Table and a substantial course in organic chemistry and synthesis. It is a core requirement for medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering and the chemical sciences, and it pairs naturally with Biology, Physics or Maths.

The full A Level is assessed across five papers, including a multiple choice paper, AS and A Level structured papers, an advanced practical skills paper and a planning, analysis and evaluation paper. The structured papers reward concise, precise answers, while the multiple choice paper hides traps in stoichiometry and organic naming that catch rushed students. Throughout, calculations and reaction mechanisms need to be set out carefully and completely.

Split your revision along the three strands and keep all of them ticking over, because they are examined together. In physical chemistry, drill the calculations, from moles and titrations to energetics, equilibria and rates, until the methods are automatic. In organic chemistry, learn the reactions as connected pathways rather than isolated facts, so you can work out a synthesis route rather than trying to memorise every one.

Practical skills carry real marks, so practise planning experiments, handling data and evaluating methods alongside the theory. Past papers are essential: work through them by topic to build technique, then sit full papers to time and mark against the official mark scheme, paying attention to the mechanism and calculation questions where full working is rewarded. Note the recurring traps in the multiple choice paper so they stop catching you.
