About AS & A Level Mathematics
Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics (9709) is the backbone qualification for anyone heading into engineering, science, economics or maths itself. The course combines Pure Mathematics with applied units in Mechanics and in Probability and Statistics, so you develop both the algebra and calculus at the core of the subject and the ability to apply them to real situations. It is demanding, but it opens more university doors than almost any other subject.
The full A Level is assessed across six papers, taken as Pure Mathematics 1 to 3 alongside Mechanics and Probability and Statistics 1 and 2, with AS Level made up of a subset of these. The Pure papers carry the most weight and everything else builds on them, so a secure grasp of algebra, functions and calculus early on makes the applied units far easier. As at IGCSE, method and clear working earn marks even where an answer slips.
