About IGCSE Computer Science (0478)
Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478) goes under the bonnet of computing. Half the course is the theory of how computers work, covering data representation, networks and the internet, hardware and software, security and the ethical side of technology. The other half is problem solving and programming, where you learn to design algorithms, work with pseudocode and write and test real programs. It suits students who like logical thinking and want to understand technology rather than just use it.
The grade comes from two written papers. Paper 1 is theory, worth 60%, and Paper 2 is problem solving and programming, worth 40%. The programming paper is where many marks are won or lost, so being genuinely comfortable writing and tracing algorithms, not just reading about them, is the key skill. Binary and hexadecimal, how data moves around a network, and the standard algorithm techniques all come up often enough to be worth mastering early.

How to do well in Computer Science
Programming is a doing subject, so write code and trace algorithms by hand regularly rather than only reading examples. Practise the common patterns, such as loops, counting and totalling, searching and sorting, and get used to following pseudocode line by line to predict its output, which is a favourite exam task. The more problems you actually work through, the faster and more accurate you become under pressure.
For the theory paper, focus on the topics that recur, especially data representation and converting between binary, denary and hexadecimal, along with how networks and security work. Learn the definitions precisely, then test yourself with past paper questions and mark against the official mark scheme. Keep a list of the ideas you keep getting wrong and revisit them until they stick.
