IGCSE English First Language (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500) is for fluent and native speakers, and it pushes reading and writing to a higher level than the second language course. You learn to read demanding texts closely, picking out ideas, tone and the effect of a writer's choices, and to write with real control, adapting your style for different purposes and audiences. It is one of the most valued IGCSEs because strong English underpins almost every other subject.

Assessment covers reading and writing, with the reading paper carrying half the marks and further assessment of listening and spoken communication depending on the route your centre takes. Across all of it the examiners are looking for the same things: understanding shown through precise reference to the text, and writing that is accurate, varied and clearly shaped for its purpose. The gap between a good grade and a top one usually comes down to control and detail rather than raw ability.

For reading, practise reading actively. Annotate texts for the writer's methods and the effect they create, and when you answer, quote briefly and explain rather than retelling the passage. Summary questions reward picking out the relevant points concisely and in your own words, which is a skill worth drilling on past papers until it is quick.

For writing, work on range and accuracy together. Learn to plan quickly so your response has a clear shape, vary your sentences and vocabulary deliberately, and proofread for the small errors that pull a grade down. Practise the different writing tasks to time, and get your work marked against the mark scheme or by a teacher so you can see exactly where the marks sit.
