IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510)

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) is taken by students who use English as an additional language and need to show they can handle it confidently in real situations. The focus is practical communication rather than literature: reading a range of texts and pulling out the right information, writing clearly for different purposes and audiences, and understanding spoken English at natural speed. A strong grade is widely accepted by universities and employers as proof of English ability.

The grade is built from two papers. Paper 2 is Reading and Writing, worth 70% and the larger part of the course, and Paper 4 is Listening, worth 30%. Success comes down to accuracy and range: reading questions carefully so you answer exactly what is asked, writing in the right register with varied vocabulary and controlled grammar, and training your ear so the listening paper does not catch you out.

For reading, the marks are in the detail. Practise skimming a text for the general idea, then scanning back for the precise words that answer each question, and get used to putting answers in your own words where the paper asks for it. For writing, learn the formats the exam uses, such as emails, reports, articles and reviews, and build a bank of stronger vocabulary and linking phrases you can bring in naturally rather than forcing.

Listening improves with exposure. Work through past listening papers, but also listen to English podcasts, news and interviews so that normal speed speech stops feeling fast. In every paper, read the questions before the recording or passage begins so you know what to listen or look for. Marking your writing against the mark scheme, or with a teacher, is the quickest way to see which errors are holding your grade back.
