IGCSE Information & Communication Technology (0417)

Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology (0417) is a practical, hands on course that builds the digital skills students actually use at school, university and work. Half of it is theory, covering how computers and networks are used, the effects of technology on daily life and the issues around data and safety. The other half is done at a computer, working in documents, spreadsheets, databases and web authoring software to produce real files to a brief.

The grade comes from three papers. Paper 1 is the written theory paper worth 40%, while Paper 2 and Paper 3 are practical papers worth 30% each, sat at a computer. Because two thirds of the marks are practical, speed and accuracy with the software matter as much as knowing the theory, and the students who do well are the ones who have practised the exact tasks enough times that they no longer have to think about how to do them.

Treat the practical papers as skills to rehearse, not topics to read. The tasks follow a predictable shape, so working through past practical papers on the real software until you can hit every step without hesitating is the fastest route to a high grade. Save your work in the right format, follow the instructions exactly, and get used to checking your output against what the question asked for, because small mistakes in file names or formatting cost easy marks.

For the theory paper, learn the definitions and the real world examples that go with them. Examiners want you to apply ideas to a situation rather than just recite them, so practise explaining how a particular technology would be used and what its advantages and drawbacks are. Past papers show you the wording the mark scheme expects, and marking your own answers against it quickly closes the gap.
